The “real” football season is finally underway! No more pretend pre-season games that don’t count and feature your favorite 2nd and 3rd string players. This is the real thing. As I’m getting ready to watch the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints in the NFL season opener, I’m thinking this doesn’t feel like football weather. I’m in shorts not sweats, and it’s 85 and sunny not 30 degrees and snowing. That’s football weather. This happens every year, though, the season starts in the summer and ends in the dead of winter. The start of football season always serves as a reminder that winter is not far off and it’s time to get ready.

My football room is a sunroom with a glass ceiling where I can watch the rain and the snow come down, or nervously eye the 70 foot cedars overhead as they bend and sway in the winter winds. Over in the corner is a little pellet stove that keeps me warm and cozy while I watch the football players with their snorting nostrils and vapor laden breaths face off like frozen gladiators on the field. The colder they look, the more I appreciate the shelter the sunroom and the pellet stove provides me from the numbing weather outside. In the main part of my house is a woodstove. This is my main heater and, thanks to last winter’s snows, I have several years worth of wood stacked and ready. As I’m watching the game and imagining the logs blazing away in the woodstove and the pellets happily dropping into the pellet stove I start thinking, when did I sweep the chimney last? How about the pellet stove? Was it working OK last May when we had our last snow or did I limp through the end of the season thinking I’d check it out this summer. I guess it’s time to do a little pre-season maintenance to get ready for the regular season! How about you?
