Woodburning 101 | Don’t forget to clean the screen

Sound familiar? My stove burned great after the chimney was swept but gradually it got “sluggish”. The wood didn’t start as quickly, it wouldn’t burn as hot as it used to and smoke started coming out the door when you first started a fire or opened it to load more wood. These are all classic signs of a plugged chimney cap. It doesn’t have to be completely blocked to cause these symptoms, just restricted enough by a build up of creosote, a by-product of the un-burned gases and moisture driven out of the wood during the burning process. We’ve received a string of phone calls lately from people with these symptoms and 99% of the time a plugged chimney cap is the cause. There could be other issues such as a down-draft problem or wet wood, but in the vast majority of cases it’s the spark arrestor screen in the cap that’s the culprit.

What causes the cap to become blocked by creosote? Burning wet wood, either not seasoned long enough or not stored properly so it becomes wet from rain or snow, is one factor. Wood should, at the very least, be under 20% moisture content to burn properly. It takes energy to evaporate the moisture out of the wood and carry it up the chimney. This is energy that would otherwise go towards creating heat, so wet wood may burn but it won’t give you the heat it should. The combination of moisture and un-burned gasses then goes up and condenses on the cooler chimney walls and screen in the cap, building up a layer of creosote.

How often should you expect to have to clean your chimney and spark arrestor screen? The answer is “that depends”. The general rule of thumb is that you should have your chimney swept at least once a year. This can vary greatly, however, depending on the moisture content of your wood and how you burn your stove. If you load your stove with wood and then close it down to a low burn constantly you can expect to have to clean your chimney and cap much more often than if you burn your stove hot on a regular basis with the air control open for about 20 minutes. Just make sure your chimney is clean beforehand if you haven’t been doing this. You may need to clean your screen much more often than you need to clean the whole chimney. In some cases you may be able to go a year between cleanings, in others it can become plugged in as little as a week. It all depends on the condition of your wood and your burning habits.

You can clean the chimney and screen yourself! If you’re comfortable getting up on your roof a handheld wire brush works well for the screen. Exciting News! The Renewable Energy Tax Credit has just been reinstated for 2013

Good news If you’re considering buying a wood or pellet stove!

The Renewable Energy Tax Credit that expired at the end of 2011 has not only been reinstated for 2013, but is also retroactive for all of 2012. This means that if you purchased a qualifying stove in 2012, you can still claim the tax credit credit. This is great news for new purchases, too, because you can claim a 10% tax credit on a qualifying new wood or pellet stove up to $300. When this ended in 2011, we were not expecting to see another incentive program like this come along again. This is probably the last time we will see this so make sure you take advantage of it.

The Senate Committee on Finance included in a bill, the Family and Business Tax Cut Certainty Act, the extension of energy efficiency tax credits including the $300 “25C tax credit” for home installation of biomass stoves and boilers. The bill would allow residential consumers to continue to be eligible for the tax credit until December 31, 2013, a two-year extension of the previous deadline. Summer is the best time to prepare for next Winter

It seems like it went from Winter to Summer in the blink of an eye. It can do the same thing in reverse. That’s why Summer is the best time to prepare for next Winter. If you burn wood, you have plenty to do and we can help.

The first thing you should do is get your wood together, because it takes at least a season to dry, maybe less out here in our hot and dry California summers.. Wet wood burns about as well as a damp rag so make sure it has plenty of time to cure.

If you’re still burning your favorite old pre-EPA Earth Stove, we have Earth Stove replacement parts for many of the older models, and now is the time to fix it up and make sure it’s in good working order. But why not make this the year you upgrade to an efficient EPA model that will burn half the wood for the same amount of heat as your old model? After all, it takes time, effort and money to buy or cut the wood and stack it so why not make the most of it? We have both new and used wood stoves for sale.

We also have Wood Stove Chimney for making any necessary repairs, as well as some helpful videos to show how it goes together, and Chimney Brushes and Rods to keep it clean and ready for the first cold snap in the Fall. Just like Summer snuck up on us here in California, it WAS snowing just about 2 weeks ago, Winter can do the same thing and that’s not the time you want to be replacing that chimney cap or sweeping last Winter’s creosote out of your chimney.
