There are three different ways that modern gas hearth appliances can be vented:

1. B-Vent - These stoves need to be vented up through the roof or into an existing chimney. When installing into an existing chimney, a liner is often required. This liner reduces the size of the chimney so the appliance will draft correctly. In most cases, B-Vent appliances get their combustion air from inside the home.

2. Direct-Vent - These appliances use a double wall pipe system to pull outside air for combustion and to exhaust the flue gas back to the outside. This system is very safe and convenient to install and maximizes the heating efficiency. Direct-Vent stoves allow multiple venting options including:

Straight back from the stove- through the wall
Up from the stove and then through the wall
Up through the roof

In some cases an existing fireplace flue can be lined to accept these stoves.

3. Catalytic Vent-Free - The Earth Stove features catalytic vent-free technology in our TG25, GBV40 and OmniView gas products. Regular vent free stoves have a good safety record, but many people are still concerned about venting into the home. Catalytic vent free resolves those concerns by scrubbing the by-products of primary combustion through the high temperatures provided by the catalyst coated ceramic grid. The Result - Virtually no carbon monoxide or other incompletely burned gases which normally occur in gas fired room heaters. In addition, particulate emissions from incomplete combustion are reduced substantially to help eliminate household soot.
